Past's Present Counterpart

While charming, this historic mill house with its three separate wings, constructed during three different times, and each having three different floor levels did not accommodate the family.

Two primary solutions were implemented. The first was to expand the first floor kitchen, great room, and rear entrance foyer. The second was to replace a flawed addition that had been built on an inadequate foundation with a new structure. This solution furnished the client with an expansive bedroom and en suite bathroom both accessible by elevator.

There was an emphasis on orienting the spaces to overlook the property’s stream in homage to the keystone of the mill house. Attention was also given to incorporating cohesive materials, matching the roof slopes, integrating the massing, and coordinating the window proportions all in an effort to seamlessly blend the new with the historic.
