Raise the Roof

This Homeland landmark is a classic stone and stucco English cottage style house originally designed by Palmer, Willis & Lamdin.  While exhibiting an abundance of charm and style, it lacked some of the functional spaces that a modern family requires. Specifically, the owners needed a larger closet for the master bedroom and a mudroom.

New space was found by raising the roof over the existing study to create a large walk-in closet off the master bedroom. An added bonus of the larger roof was the opportunity to craft a covered patio underneath it, creating the perfect outdoor entertaining space. The mudroom was formed by enclosing an existing open porch and building a new porch adjacent to it. The challenge was to blend the new construction in a manner that merged with the existing architecture. Through careful attention to detail, materials, and proportion the new spaces were carefully crafted so that they meet the needs of the family while seamlessly blending with the original structure.
